A reading of this place

The burial mounds begin before you expect them. Walking from Dobayanosato Station toward the river, grassed-over keyhole shapes rise quietly from the flat plain — not cordoned off behind fences, simply present, integrated into the residential grid of a town that has grown around them for centuries. Fujiidera sits at the confluence of the Yamato and Ishikawa rivers, and the density of kofun here is not decorative: the Furuichi Kofun Group covers the area in overlapping burial grounds, some wooded, some barely distinguishable from a park mound where children play.

The older institutional life of the town clusters around Kōfuji, a temple with roots in the eighth century and a place of active pilgrimage on the Saigoku circuit. The approach streets carry the low-key commerce of a monzen-machi — small shops, a few restaurants — rather than tourist infrastructure. Domyoji, a nunnery nearby, holds its own quiet gravity, associated with the scholar-poet Sugawara no Michizane and his aunt, though the temple itself asks nothing of you beyond attention. Domyoji Tenmangu shrine, on the same grounds of association, is planted with varieties of plum trees that make February a particular month here.

The town's two signature products — domyojiko, a dried rice flour still used in wagashi, and Kawachi grapes — speak to an agricultural past shaped by the Yamato River's 1704 rerouting and the alluvial plain it left behind. The Aicel Schla Hall holds a water-bird-shaped haniwa designated as an important cultural property, a clay object that somehow distills the strangeness of this place: a modern commuter city where the dead of an ancient court still occupy the ground underfoot.
