Oyabe, Toyama

The station at Ishidō sits quietly on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway line, a functional stop between Takaoka and Kanazawa where commuters board without ceremony. Oyabe, the city it serves, grew from the merger of old post towns along the Hokuriku Kaidō — a route once busy enough to matter strategically, most dramatically at Kurikara Pass, where Minamoto no Yoshinaka routed the Taira forces in the twelfth century. That battle is still rehearsed each summer in the Genpei Kagyū Matsuri, where torches and cattle figure in the reenactment of the fire-ox stratagem that turned the tide.

Alongside this layered history, Oyabe carries a stranger visual register. Scattered through the city are public buildings styled after European landmarks — a deliberate Märchen architecture movement that gives certain streetscapes an unsettling, almost theatrical quality. It sits in odd contrast with the surrounding Tonami Plain, where dispersed farmhouses stand apart in their fields in the sankyoson pattern, each homestead islanded by trees. From the observation tower at Crossland Oyabe, the plain spreads out in that characteristic patchwork, unhurried and agricultural.

The Ōtani Museum, housed in a nationally registered structure built in the azumadachi style, holds folk materials connected to the birthplace of the Ōtani brothers. Closer to the everyday, the town produces Asahi soy sauce and miso, and Nagashichi noodles — modest goods that travel no further than they need to. The Habu Gokoku Hachimangū, its main hall a designated Important Cultural Property, receives visitors without fuss, its origins traced to Yoshinaka's own prayers before battle.
