A reading of this place

At Ikebukuro station, the lines converge — JR, Tobu, Seibu, and the subway — and the crowds that pour through the east and west exits seem to belong to entirely different cities. The west side tilts toward department stores and izakayas; the east side pushes into Sunshine City, where the Ancient Orient Museum holds its collection of West and Central Asian archaeology quietly above the shopping floors. Toshima-ku holds this kind of compression naturally, without apology.

Walk far enough from the station and the texture shifts. Along the route of the Toden Arakawa tram line, Zoshigaya opens into a different register: the old cemetery established in 1874, where Natsume Soseki and Lafcadio Hearn are buried among trees, and the Kishimojin precinct with its kiosk selling *susuki mimizuku* — small owls woven from pampas grass, a local craft that has been sold at the temple grounds for generations. The Jiyu Gakuen Myonichikan, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1921, stands a short walk away, its geometric Oya-stone facade catching the afternoon light at an angle that feels almost accidental.

Further north, Sugamo's covered shopping street carries a slower pace, its stalls and pharmacies drawing an older crowd on weekdays. The neighborhood sits within what was once Somei village, where the Someiyoshino cherry was first cultivated by Edo-period nurserymen — a fact that the *Sugamo Somei Yoshino Sakura Matsuri* keeps in circulation each year. Toshima is dense, layered, and in places surprisingly quiet, its history folded into the ordinary movement of a working ward.
