A reading of this place

Steam from the SL Kyuroku-kan drifts past the platform at Moka Station on weekends, where a preserved locomotive sits close enough to touch. The museum is attached to the station itself — no gap between transit and memory. Moka sits at the northern edge of the Kanto plain, where the Kinugawa lowlands give way to the Moka plateau, and the flatness of rice country stretches toward the Gokko River on the east side. This is the old heart of Haga District, and the land carries that administrative weight quietly — in the grid of the town, in the scale of its public buildings.

Omaえ Jinja draws people across the Kanto region for its festivals: the Nagoshi-sai in summer, the Setsubun-sai in winter, the Reitaisai each year. The shrine has stood for well over a millennium, and the compound still anchors the ritual calendar of the city. Nearby, Senjuji temple holds a different kind of gravity — built by Shinran himself, it belongs to the Shinshu Takada sect and houses a Zenkoji-style Amida triad. The two sites are not adjacent, but together they suggest how deeply layered the religious life of this town has been, long before it became a center for automobile parts and aluminum rolling.

Moka-momen, the locally woven cotton, and the town's own sake mark the older economy that once defined the district. Ninomiya Sontoku spent decades at the Sakuramachi Jinya site, now preserved as a national historic site with a park around it. The town has absorbed industry without erasing these older registers — the Moka plateau holds both the assembly lines and the shrine precincts, matter-of-factly, as working towns do.
