A reading of this place

Stone steps rise from the valley floor toward Kotohira-gu, worn smooth by centuries of sandal and boot. The shrine sits partway up Zozu-san, and the climb is long enough that pilgrims still stop at the lantern-lined rest points, catching breath, buying a stick of kamiyo-ame from a roadside stall. The town of Kotohira grew up entirely in service to this ascent — the lodgings, the souvenir shops, the udon counters steaming beside the path — and that organizing logic still holds.

At the base of the approach, the Kanamaruza stands apart from the shrine commerce. Built in 1835, it is the oldest surviving kabuki theater in Japan, its wooden interior intact enough to host the annual Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Oshibai performances. The building carries the smell of old timber and lacquer in the way that only structures still in use tend to do. Nearby, the roofed Sayabashi crosses the Kanakura River on copper-tiled eaves, its curved gable an architectural aside in a town otherwise oriented vertically. Kotohira-gu's own Asahi-sha and the Oku-shoin count among the designated cultural properties scattered through the precinct, making the climb less a single destination than a sequence of encounters.

Down in the town proper, the rhythm slows. Kyu-manju, the moxibustion-shaped sweet called kyu-man, appears in almost every shop window. Garlic is grown locally. The Kotohira station building on the JR Dosan Line is itself a registered industrial heritage site, and the Kotoden terminus nearby marks where the electric railway from Takamatsu ends. The Seto Inland Sea lies not far to the north, and the maritime connection surfaces in the Kotohira Maritime Museum — an unexpected angle on a mountain shrine town, and a reminder that the faith here once traveled by sea as much as by road.
