A reading of this place

The platform signs at Tadotsu Station mark it as the starting point of the JR Shikoku Dosan Line, and the building keeps the slightly oversized proportions of a junction that mattered early. Freight rolling stock waits in the sidings; the railway works are still part of the town's working life. A short walk brings you to Tadotsu Port, where the ferry timetable for Takamijima and Sanagishima is posted near the ticket window, and the pace shifts to one set by tides rather than rails.

The town sits on a thin shelf between the Sanuki plain and the Seto Inland Sea, and it carries the residue of the Shiwaku islands' maritime past — Jōrenji temple holds the grave of a sailor from the Kanrin Maru, and the world headquarters of Shōrinji Kempō stands quietly within the same modest grid of streets. None of this announces itself. You notice it the way you notice the smell of diesel near the harbor, or the cases of ikanago in a shop window.

Out on Sanagishima, cats move along the breakwater and the ryōbosei burial grounds remain in use as a designated folk cultural property; on Takamijima, a former school has become the island's nature centre, and the shrine grove around Ryūōgūsha is left as it is. The texture here is of a port that never stopped working, where rail, sea, and small islands keep each other in conversation, and where a long stay would mostly mean learning the ferry schedule by heart.
