A reading of this place

Pilgrims move through Sanuki City at their own pace, straw sandals worn thin by the time they reach Ōkubo-ji, the temple where the eighty-eight-stage circuit closes. The journey ends here, quietly, and the town absorbs that arrival without ceremony. Shido-ji, a station earlier on the circuit, carries its own weight — the legend of a diver who retrieved a jewel from the sea bottom is folded into the temple's atmosphere as naturally as incense smoke.

The geography insists on contrast: the Sanuki mountain range presses down from the north while Shido Bay and Tsuda Bay open the southern edge to the Seto Inland Sea. At Tsuda no Matsubara, a long stretch of white sand and pine, the water is close enough to smell. Inland, at Maegawa Dam, a miniature pilgrimage route of stone figures lines the lakeside path, a quiet echo of the larger circuit that defines the region. Hiraga Gennai, the Edo-period inventor, was born in this area, and the memorial museum bearing his name sits without fanfare among the ordinary roads of the town.

Food here is grounded rather than elaborate. Sanuki udon — thick, firm noodles in clear broth — is the daily staple, unremarkable to locals and still capable of stopping a traveler mid-bite. Kankan-zushi, a pressed regional sushi, surfaces at local stalls. At Ōkushi Natural Park, Sanuki Winery produces wine from hillside plots overlooking the sea, a detail that sits oddly and honestly alongside the pilgrimage trails threading through the same landscape.
