# Ringo Onsen

In Asahi, a small town in Yamagata Prefecture, a bathing facility sits partway up a modest hillside northeast of the town center. Ringo Onsen opened in 1991, built through the initiative of the local agricultural cooperative — not for tourists, primarily, but for the people who work the orchards. Asahi is known as the birthplace of the unwrapped Fuji apple, a cultivation method that lets sunlight touch every side of the fruit. The same directness, the same absence of unnecessary covering, seems to carry over into the place itself.

The water is a moor spring — mooru-sen — dark and organic, drawn from ancient plant matter compressed deep underground. What sets this bath apart is that apples float in it. Not as decoration, exactly, and not as aromatherapy in any calculated sense. They simply bob there on the surface, releasing a faint sweetness into the mineral water, giving the experience a texture that is both familiar and quietly strange. You sit in water the color of tea, surrounded by the scent of fruit and earth, and realize you are soaking in something that feels like the town's own logic made warm and liquid. There is an indoor bath and, in certain seasons, a rotenburo open to the hillside air.

This is a day-use facility, so staying for several nights would mean finding lodging nearby and returning each morning or evening — which may, in fact, be the better way. A place like this is not meant to be consumed in a single visit. There is a small apple museum adjacent, connected to the local agricultural research station, and a roadside station where the town's produce is sold. The rhythms here belong to people who grow things for a living, and the bath exists as a pause within that labor. You would come, soak, dry off, and step back into the orchard air, carrying the faint smell of apples on your skin.
