Ten thousand dancers. Each carries a hanagasa — a broad hat decorated with red safflower blossoms — and moves through the summer streets of Yamagata calling out *Yassho, Makasho* in a rhythm that becomes, by the end, the sound of the city itself. The Hanagasa Festival is the last of Tohoku's five great summer celebrations to enter the list, and perhaps the most purely joyful.
