What AURA shows after a disaster
After an earthquake or other disaster, AURA relays what local and prefectural governments have published, along with a link to the original notice. The following is our full policy.
Policy
1. AURA does not assess safety.
What we show is a relay of official announcements, not our own evaluation of conditions on the ground. Always consult the original notice before deciding whether to travel.
2. An uncoloured area is not necessarily safe.
Uncoloured means only that no official restriction has been confirmed. Absence of an announcement is not the same as normal operation. AURA does not use colour to indicate that a place is safe.
3. Colour indicates reachability, not severity.
We distinguish three levels — entry or stay restricted, transport disrupted, services limited — from a traveller's point of view. This is not a ranking of damage.
4. Nothing is shown without a source.
Every entry carries a link to the original announcement and an Internet Archive snapshot taken when we published it. If the original disappears, the basis for what we showed remains verifiable. Our system cannot publish an entry that has no source.
5. We use the most local source available.
A municipality's own announcement takes precedence over a prefecture-wide one. When a closer source becomes available, we replace the basis and keep a record of the change.
6. We do not mark areas in long-term recovery as warnings.
Years after a disaster, the problem is not that visitors are at risk but that visitors stop coming. For these areas we begin from the fact that they are open.
7. Entries expire.
Every acute-phase entry has an end date and disappears automatically. Extending one requires reading the source again. The most common failure in disaster information is leaving a notice up until it is no longer true.
