**Hagenoyu Onsen**

The ground itself exhales here. Across the highland plateau on the western flank of Mount Waita, steam rises from cracks in the earth — not from a single vent but from seemingly everywhere, as though the land had never quite cooled. Hagenoyu sits within the cluster of five hot springs that make up the Waita Onsen district, a small constellation of settlements in Oguni, Kumamoto Prefecture, where the sulfur-tinged air and the altitude give everything a faintly otherworldly weight. The water is a mildly alkaline simple sulfur spring, fed by sources close enough to the surface that the village lives, quite literally, on top of its own heat.

There is history here, though it arrives without ceremony. The place drew tōji bathers and hikers to Mount Waita long before it became known, briefly, during the secluded-spring boom of the 1960s and 70s. The manga artist Tsuge Yoshiharu once rendered it in his work — an artist drawn to marginal, mist-filled places where daily life and landscape blur together. Among the handful of inns, Matsuya claims a history of a hundred and fifty years; Sansui offers a cave bath and open-air pools where bathers share the water without partition. At Waita Sansō, a milky white spring fills a rooftop barrel bath from which the surrounding mountains open out in every direction.

To stay several nights would be to settle into a rhythm dictated almost entirely by steam and silence. Four ryokan and a communal bathhouse — that is the sum of the place. The trails to Waita's summit begin nearby, an hour's walk to the top, but there is no particular pressure to go anywhere. One could simply watch the vapor columns shift across the hillside, moving from bath to bath as the light changes, letting the sulfur work its way gently into skin and clothing alike. Hagenoyu is not trying to be anything other than what it is: a few roofs, a great deal of hot water, and the steady breathing of the earth beneath.
