# Sakakibara Onsen

The water here is alkaline and simple — which is to say, it does its work without announcing itself. Sakakibara Onsen sits in the mountains of Mie Prefecture, along a fault line where pressurized groundwater has been rising for somewhere between fifteen hundred and two thousand years, pushed upward by shifts in the earth that predate any written record of the place. Yet written records do exist: the spring appears in the *Makura no Sōshi* as one of three celebrated baths, known then as Nanaguri no Yu. That was a thousand years ago, and the water, one imagines, has not changed its character.

What changed, over time, was the purpose people brought to it. By the Edo period, pilgrims bound for Ise would stop here to purify themselves before approaching the great shrines — a ritual cleansing, body and spirit made ready through bathing. Iiyama Shrine, established in 927, stands as the devotional center of the settlement, once called the Onsen Daimyōjin, the great deity of the hot spring itself. Even now the atmosphere carries something of that seriousness. There is little here that caters to entertainment. The town is small, set in mountain terrain, and its character is closer to a convalescent retreat than a resort.

To stay several nights would be to settle into a particular kind of quiet — the quiet of a place that has always been about the body's slow repair. The waters are known for softening the skin, and the days would likely take on a gentle, unhurried shape: the bath in the morning, a walk past Rinshō-ji with its curious painting of cats in a nirvana scene, the bath again in the evening. The mountains close around you. The pilgrims have mostly gone, but the water still rises, still warm, still indifferent to whoever arrives.
