A reading of this place

A station called Omochanomachi — "Toy Town" — sits on the Tobu Utsunomiya Line, and the name alone signals that something unusual happened here. In the 1960s, Mibu deliberately recruited a toy manufacturing district, and that decision reshaped the town's identity as thoroughly as the castle once did. Bandai's museum stands here, tracing the arc of Japanese toy history through a collection that runs from tin robots to contemporary character goods. Alongside it, the Mibu Toy Museum holds Edison's inventions and antique playthings from around the world — objects that feel oddly at home in a town that reinvented itself through manufacture.

Yet the older layers persist without drama. The Mibu Castle ruins survive as a park, its moats and earthworks intact, with a history and folklore museum tucked inside. Nearby, Seichū Shrine holds a memorial to the origins of kanpyō — dried gourd shavings still grown in the surrounding flatlands — alongside a relic of a far bloodier chapter of Edo history. The Ogatama Shrine, guardian of the town since the castle era, retains its Edo-period main hall and a copper torii listed as a cultural property. Jōraku-ji temple carries the lineage of the Mibu clan's founder and the domain lords who followed.

The land itself is flat, threaded by the Omoi, Kuro, and Sugata rivers, given over to agriculture and industry in roughly equal measure. Strawberries, burdock root, and cut flowers come out of these fields alongside kanpyō. The Michinoeki Mibu roadside station spreads across an expanse connected directly to the expressway, selling local produce to travelers passing through. The Yasakamatsuri and the茅の輪くぐり at Ogatama Shrine mark the year's rhythm for residents who live between the toy factories and the gourd fields — a combination that, once noticed, becomes the place's most defining quality.
