Nagano, Nagano
The smell of incense reaches you before the gate does. Walking the stone-paved approach toward Zenkoji, past rows of lodging temples, the city announces itself through devotion rather than commerce — though the two have never been entirely separate here. Nagano grew as a monzen-machi, a town shaped by the traffic of pilgrims, and that layering still shows in the street plan, in the old inn facades, in the sheer density of small shops selling shichimi togarashi from Yawataya Isogoro, whose blended spice has been a fixture of the temple precinct for generations.
Step away from the central approach and the city opens into something more dispersed. Matsushiro, to the southeast, carries the quieter weight of the Sanada clan's castle town — the Sanada Homotsukan holds what remains of that history, and the streets around it move at a pace that has little to do with tourism. Northwest, the plateau of Togakushi sits among the mountains of the Hokushin Gogaku range, where buckwheat grown in the thin highland soil becomes the soba that people travel considerable distances to eat, served simply, in wooden restaurants half-hidden by cedar.
The Chikuma and Sai rivers frame the basin below, and the orchards of the Kawanakajima plain — apples, white peaches, nectarines — fill the agricultural calendar between the festivals: the Binzuru procession in summer, the Ebisu fireworks in autumn, the lantern illuminations that transform the Zenkoji precinct into something altogether different after dark.
