Hot Spring

At the southern edge of Akiyamago, where the Nakatsu River cuts through a narrow valley in Nagano, the water simply rises from the riverbed. Not from a pipe or a tap, but from the gravel itself. The source runs at over fifty degrees, and bathers adjust the temperature by shifting stones, letting the cold river flow in or pulling it away. There are no instructions posted. The method has been passed along, quietly, since the Edo period — since 1722, when this place was already known as somewhere people came to heal rather than to sightsee.

Getting here takes intention. A bus from Tsunan, then a shared taxi by reservation, through a valley that narrows as you go. By the time you arrive at the small cluster of buildings that constitutes the settlement, the distance you have traveled feels less like kilometers and more like a shift in register. Three inns operate here — among them Yukiakari and Yusengaku, the latter run by the village — and none of them suggests urgency. Several nights would not feel excessive. They would feel, rather, appropriate.

The water itself is a calcium-sodium chloride and sulfate spring, mineral-dense, with the slight weight that such waters carry on the skin. To lie in a hollow scooped from the riverbank, with the current moving inches away, is to understand something about the difference between a bath and bathing. The Nakatsu River does not pause for you. The water from below does not hurry. Somewhere between the two, you find your own stillness.
