The road from Yudanaka station climbs gently for fifteen minutes by bus into the forested hills of Yamanouchi, and then the settlement appears—or rather, it doesn't quite announce itself. Kanbayashi is a place without a bustling center, without neon or souvenir arcades. What it has are several springs of differing mineral character—sodium, calcium, chloride—rising through the mountain quietly, as if they had always been doing so and would prefer not to be noticed. Half an hour on foot from the hot spring settlement, Japanese macaques soak in their own thermal pools at Jigokudani Yaen-kōen, but to focus on the monkeys is to miss the texture of Kanbayashi itself.
