A reading of this place

The terminus at Yudanaka station sits quietly at the end of the Nagano Electric Railway line, already well above the valley floor. From here, the land rises sharply — more than nine-tenths of Yamanouchi-machi is forest and highland, the elevation climbing from riverside orchards of apple, peach, and grape up through beech and pine toward the volcanic ridgelines of Shiga Kogen.

The hot springs come from that volcanic history. Shibu Onsen, Yudanaka Onsen, Kanbayashi Onsen — each has its own character, its own temperature and color. The inn Yorozuya, founded in the Edo Kansei era, holds a nationally registered historic structure and a Momoyama-style bath; Shibu-toge Hotel stands precisely on the prefectural border with Gunma, issuing certificates to those who reach what is the highest point on a national highway. These are not decorative details — they reflect the layered way this place has absorbed travelers over centuries, first as a post stop on the Kusatsu Kaido road, then as a mountain resort opened by rail. The Shiga Kogen Hotel Historical Memorial Hall preserves the 1937 hotel structure without admission charge, its displays including materials on Olympic athlete Chiharu Igaya.

At the roadside station Kitashinshu Yamanouchi, the soba made from locally grown buckwheat flour — blended at a high ratio — anchors the food stall menu. In late spring, the Mizubasho Festival marks the bloom of skunk cabbage across the highland marshes; in autumn, the harvest festival turns attention to the orchards below. Oike Pond, its water an unusual shade of green at altitude, carries an old legend of a giant serpent. The ordinary and the mythic coexist here without much ceremony.
