# Kasumi Onsen

Kasumi sits just inland from its own coastline, close enough to the sea that the smell of salt and diesel finds its way through the streets near the harbor. The waters here are low in mineral concentration, gently alkaline, warm rather than scalding — a quality that invites long soaking without drama. The source was first drawn up in 1979, and a second well developed in 2008, so this is not a place with centuries of inn culture behind it. What it has instead is something quieter: the rhythm of a working fishing port, and a small cluster of more than fourteen lodgings arranged around Kasumi harbor, each one oriented, in its way, toward the water.

To spend several nights here is to fall into that harbor rhythm almost without noticing. Fishing boats come and go. Evenings settle into the particular stillness of a port town after the day's commerce is done, the water catching the last light, distant lanterns from fishing vessels appearing offshore after dark. The Sanin Main Line passes through, and the town remains accessible rather than remote — which means locals actually live here, and the onsen exists in service of that life as much as anything else.

Okimi Park lies nearby, and Daijoji temple too, though neither demands a visit. The excursion boats departing Kasumi port offer a view of the coastline that cannot be had from land. But the real argument for staying is simpler: water that asks nothing of you, a room with the sea not far off, and evenings with nowhere else to be.
