The waters here are alkaline, drawn from six separate sources at a combined flow that speaks less of scarcity than of quiet abundance. They are sulfurous, simple in their chemistry, high in their pH — the kind that leaves skin feeling almost weightlessly smooth, as though the body has been gently reconsidered. Tsunagi sits on the southwestern edge of Morioka, along the shore of Lake Gosho, a reservoir-lake ringed by low hills, with Iwate-san visible in the distance on clear days. The setting is unhurried in the way that places adjacent to water often are — the lake neither dramatic nor decorative, simply present, organizing the light and the silence around it.

The place carries an old weight. It is said that Minamoto no Yoshiie, passing through during the Former Nine Years' War in the eleventh century, tied his horse to a stone here — the *tsunagi-ishi*, the tethering stone — and that is how the name persisted. Whether or not the stone remains, the name does, and names in places like this tend to accumulate meaning slowly, over centuries of people arriving tired and leaving restored. A small shrine, Tsunagi Onsen Jinja, watches over the district, and each September its festival quietly marks another year in the life of the place.

To stay several nights at Tsunagi is to fall into a rhythm that has little to do with itineraries. One might walk the lakeside paths of Gosho Hiriki Park in the morning, or drift out to Koiwai Farm, where the land has been worked for generations. The *yamaichi-te-yu* hand bath and *nekoishi-ashi-yu* foot bath ask almost nothing of you — only that you stop, briefly, and attend to what the water is doing. Morioka is close enough to reach easily, far enough to feel distant. Tsunagi remains what it has long been: a place where the waters do their work, and the days pass without demanding to be filled.
