Hot Spring

At six hundred meters on the flank of Kurikoma-san, the air already carries a different weight. The road up from the valley narrows gradually, and by the time you arrive, the lowland world feels genuinely distant. This is not the kind of place that announces itself. It has been here, in one form or another, since 1720 — since the fifth year of the Kyōhō era, when the Edo period was still finding its footing — and that long continuity gives it a quality that is harder to name than simply old.

What draws people here, and has drawn them for nearly three centuries, is the water itself. Two distinct sources rise at Kurikoma Kogen: a chloride spring and a sulfur spring, each with its own character, its own weight against the skin. To move between them over the course of a stay is to understand why the Japanese concept of tōji — bathing not as leisure but as slow, repeated cure — ever took root. A single afternoon tells you little. Several nights begin to tell you something else.

The facilities are modest: Haimu Zāru Kurikoma near the trailhead, Shin-yu Onsen Kurikoma-sō along the mountain slope. Neither strains for elegance. What they offer instead is proximity — to the water, to the mountain, to the particular quiet that settles over a highland valley when evening comes and the day-trippers have gone back down the road.
