Hot Spring

To reach the water, you must first descend. A cable car carries you down into the gorge for five minutes, the valley walls rising around you, the sound of the river growing closer. This is Iya Onsen, set along the Iya Valley in Tokushima Prefecture, counted among Japan's three most secluded hot springs. The distinction feels earned rather than bestowed. The alkaline sulfur water surfaces at the bottom of a steep ravine, and the open-air bath sits beside the stream itself, as though the architecture simply had to follow wherever the earth decided to offer warmth.

The valley carries old stories — tales of Heike clan fugitives who are said to have retreated into these mountains centuries ago. The springs were tapped by drilling in 1965, and Hotel Iya Onsen was completed in 1972, yet nothing about the setting feels recent. The gorge imposes its own sense of duration. The hotel is a member of the Japan Association of Secluded Hot Springs, and the bus ride from Ōboke Station takes roughly forty minutes along a prefectural road that winds through terrain that seems to resist easy access. One does not pass through Iya on the way to somewhere else.

To stay here for several nights would be to let the rhythm of the cable car — the slow descent, the slow return — become ordinary. You would begin to notice which hour the light enters the gorge, how the sound of the river changes with stillness around it. The water is soft, faintly sulfurous, the kind that makes your skin feel like it belongs to someone more rested than you. There is very little else to do, which may be precisely the point. The valley asks almost nothing of you, and in that asking nothing, offers rather a great deal.
