Aichi's Three Islands · 3

• Himakajima 0.78 km² The ferry terminals at Shisaki and Katana sit at the tip of the Chita Peninsula, where timetables to Himakajima and Shinojima are read by locals out of habit rather than need.
• Shinojima 0.78 km² The high-speed boat from Shinojima Port comes in low across the water, and the dock smells of diesel and drying nori.
• Sakushima The ferry from Isshiki takes about twenty-five minutes, and by the time the engine slows, the black coal-tar walls of the western settlement come into view, packed in a fan across the slope.

• Awashima 9.64 km² 新潟県 The ferry from Iwafune harbor takes the better part of a morning, or rather less on the high-speed catamaran, and either way the mainland recedes until the Sea of Japan becomes the only horizon.
• Hegura 0.57 km² 石川県 The ferry from Wajima Port runs once a day, the boat named Kiumi taking somewhat over an hour to cross open water.
