Yaeyama Hoonen-sai: The Harvest Offering of the Far Islands
Annual
Festival
In the Yaeyama islands — Japan's southwestern edge — each community holds its own harvest festival in the lunar summer. The dances differ from island to island; some are not open to visitors at all. What remains consistent is the character of the offering: not performed for an audience, but addressed to forces older than tourism, older than the Japanese nation-state. Some prayers in Japan have not yet been explained.
