The year in Japan

June 2027

12 gatherings, listed not by rank but as they fall.

June is the month travel guides apologize for, which is exactly why it works. Yes, it rains — soft, warm, intermittent rain that turns every temple garden into a film set. Hydrangeas bloom in their tens of thousands along temple paths, colored by the acidity of the soil itself. Moss does whatever moss does best. In Iwate, a procession of a hundred horses in full ceremonial dress walks to a shrine, bells ringing, to thank the animals for their year of work. In the mountains west of Hiroshima, an entire village plants rice by hand to drums and song, a festival so old UNESCO eventually noticed. The famous cities are at their emptiest. Room rates drop. And between the rains come stretches of improbable clarity, washed light, everything green enough to hurt. Bring an umbrella and lower your expectations of the sky. Everything at ground level will exceed them.
