Ishii, Tokushima
Flat land stretches north toward the Yoshino River, broken only by the slow bend of the Iio River through the middle of the town. Ishii sits just west of Tokushima city, close enough that morning commuters fill the platforms at Shimoura Station, yet the surrounding fields hold their own pace — rice and vegetables, the quiet machinery of agricultural work.
The Awa Kokubunji Nunnery site survives here, a patch of ground from the Nara period where the layout of the original temple precinct has been confirmed and marked as a national historic site. Walking past it on an ordinary afternoon, there is little ceremony — just the low outline of the land, a few explanatory boards, the sound of a truck on Route 192. The Takechi family residence stands among the town's cultural properties, its structure carrying the domestic scale of an older rural Tokushima.
To the south, Kienzan and Chausuyama rise as a low ridge that defines the edge of the plain. The Daijuu Weir on the Yoshino River sits within the town's boundary, a fixed point where the river is held and measured. Forest Nagoya's dairy operations give the town an industrial note beneath its agricultural surface — milk processed here, moving outward. Ishii is the kind of flat, working town where the ancient and the functional occupy the same unremarkable ground without announcing themselves.
