A reading of this place

Cabbage grows at altitude here, dense rows of it across the plateau, harvested through the cool highland summer that makes Tsumagoi village one of the few places in Gunma where the air carries a genuine chill even in August. The village sits in a bowl of volcanoes — Asama-yama, Azumaya-san, Higashi-Kagonoto-yama — each shaping the soil and the silence differently. JR's Manza-Kazawaguchi Station is the practical entry point, but the landscape doesn't announce itself at the platform; it accumulates slowly as the road climbs.

The weight of Asama-yama's history settles at Karahara Kannon-dō, where a stone staircase was buried by the great eruption of 1783 and only a handful of steps remain above ground. The Tsumagoi Local History Museum holds the material record of that disaster alongside Jōmon-era artifacts, a reminder that people moved through this highland long before the cabbage fields or the ski lifts arrived. At Manza Onsen, sulfurous steam rises from a hot spring set at high elevation — the kind of bath where the smell reaches you before the water does. Further into the plateau, lesser-known springs like Handeки Onsen and Oku-Tsumagoi Onsen sit quietly off the main circuit, their names rarely appearing on itineraries.

The lava tree molds of Asama-yama and the Yuno-maru rhododendron colony at Yunomaru are designated natural monuments, visible evidence of the volcanic and botanical forces that shaped this terrain. The Teki-iwa rock formation on Azumaya-san punctuates the ridgeline. What accumulates across Tsumagoi is not scenery assembled for visitors but a working highland — farms, hot springs, old disaster sites, and the particular kurokо and highland vegetables that come from soil repeatedly remade by fire.
