Hot Spring

The road into Totsukawa takes longer than the map suggests. Buses from Yamato-Yagi or Shingu wind through the mountains of southern Nara for hours, and by the time the valley opens onto the blue-grey surface of Lake Futano, something in the body has already begun to slow. The lake is a reservoir, formed when the dam was built in 1974, and the village shifted itself accordingly — a quiet relocation that says something about how people here have always adapted to the land rather than argued with it. The waters, though, go back much further. They were first discovered in the Genroku era, three centuries ago, and whatever the cartographers and engineers have rearranged since, the source remains.

The spring here is a sodium bicarbonate water, flowing entirely unblended from the source — a commitment the village has made formally and keeps. Six small inns and a handful of guesthouses are scattered along the lakeshore, along with two communal bathhouses where the water arrives the same way for everyone. There is no hierarchy in that. You lower yourself into the same water the next person will, and the one before you did, and the distinction between guest and local quietly dissolves.

To stay for several nights is to notice what you might miss in one. The stillness is not emptiness — it has texture. The dam lake holds light differently at different hours. The bathhouses open and close with a rhythm that is not yours yet, and then gradually is. Totsukawa was designated a national health resort in 1985, a recognition less of luxury than of something more considered: that certain waters, in certain places, restore something the body didn't know it had spent.
