# Nanbu Arcadia Onsen

The name is almost too grand for what it is — a day-use bathing facility beside the Fuji River floodplain, in a small town in the southern reaches of Yamanashi. There is no row of ryokan, no lantern-lit alley. Nanbu Arcadia Onsen exists because the town decided, sometime in the 1990s, that it wanted a hot spring, and so it drilled — nearly fifteen hundred meters straight down — until it found one. The water came up at 49.5 degrees Celsius, an alkaline simple spring, warm enough that no boiler was ever needed. In a region where other facilities must heat what they draw from the earth, this felt like a small municipal triumph.

Nanbunoyu, as the facility is called, opened in 1999 and was renovated twenty years later. It sits close to the town center, a three-minute walk from Naifune Station on the Minobu Line. Eight daily bus runs connect the station to the rest of the town. The geography is flat, riverine, unhurried — the kind of place where the parking lot matters more than the view, and where the faces in the changing room are the same ones you would see at the post office. The spring was developed for the welfare of residents and the quiet hope of drawing a few visitors. It carries that character still.

To stay several nights here would be to find yourself without a program. There is no second temple to visit, no famous walking course to complete. You would return to the bath each day, noticing how the alkaline water softens your skin a little more with each soak, how the heat — neither scalding nor tepid — asks nothing of you. The rhythm would be the town's rhythm: the train arriving and departing, the river running wide and grey beyond the embankment. It is not a destination that promises transformation. It is a warm bath that a town built for itself, and that you are welcome to share.
