Hot Spring

The waters here do not present themselves uniformly. Across seven distinct hot spring settlements scattered through the mountains of southwestern Niigata, the baths shift in color — clear, red, white, black — drawn from five separate sources with five different mineral characters. This alone sets Myoko Kogen apart from places where a single pipe feeds every tub. To move between Sekionsen and Tsubame Onsen, between Akakura and Suginosawa, is to encounter something closer to a landscape of waters than a single destination. The collective name for these seven — *Myoko Shichigosan no Yu* — carries a quiet pride in that variety.

The history of this plateau is not easy. The valleys known as Kita Jigokudani fed the springs at Akakura, and that same terrain brought destruction: a debris flow in 1978, another disaster in 2011. Akakaura Shinyu, which draws from the same northern source, carries that layered past in its bones. The ski boom of the 1980s brought crowds and noise; the mountain gave back, in its own time, on its own terms. What remains is a place that has absorbed both prosperity and loss without becoming a monument to either.

To stay for several nights is to notice the rhythm rather than the scenery. The Myoko Kogen station on the Echigo Tokimeki line marks the arrival, but the real arrival happens later — when the color of the water in the evening bath is simply taken as given, when the variety of mineral weight against the skin becomes ordinary, when the mountains of the Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park outside the window are no longer remarkable. That ordinariness, earned over a few quiet days, is what this kind of place offers.
