Hot Spring

Three inns remain where once, it is said, there were a thousand houses. Motoyu Onsen sits deep in the mountains of Tochigi Prefecture, the point from which the wider Shiobara hot spring district first began—its origins traced to the year 806. Earthquakes struck more than once across the centuries, and the old settlement of Yumoto village was abandoned and then, eventually, restored. That pattern of loss and return has left the place with a particular quietness, the kind that belongs not to emptiness but to endurance.

The waters here are sodium chloride springs laced with sulfur, and among them is something uncommon: a dark bath, a *kuroyu*, where the mineral content renders the water nearly black. You lower yourself in and lose sight of your own limbs. There is a Shinto shrine, Onsen Jinja, whose sacred waters are drawn from the source itself, and an old Shingon temple, Yusenji, that has accompanied this settlement through its long, interrupted history. Once a year the Shiobara Onsen Koshiki Yu-matsuri is held, a ceremony rooted in the place's deep connection to its springs. The rituals here are not decorative; they are structural.

To reach Motoyu requires commitment—a bus ride of some forty minutes from the nearest rail station, then another fifteen by taxi. This remoteness is not incidental. It is what has kept the place to three quiet inns rather than a dozen large hotels. A stay of several nights here would mean mornings defined by sulfur on the air, afternoons where nothing much compels you forward, and evenings returning again to that dark water. The mountains hold the valley close. The spring, unbothered, continues to rise.
