# Kawasoko Onsen

The river runs close here. At Kawasoko Onsen, tucked into the mountain interior of former Bungo Province in Oita Prefecture, the Machida River is not scenery so much as presence — its sound threading through whatever else you might be doing. The single inn, Hotarugawasō, sits quietly beside it, and there is almost nothing else. One bathhouse, a drinking fountain for the waters, and the river.

The bath itself is the reason people have made their way here across many centuries. The legend of the founding reaches back to the first year of the Engi era, and a connection to Sugawara no Michizane is part of the place's remembered story. What can be seen and felt today is more concrete: the floor of the communal bath is laid with rounded river stones, and the hot water rises directly through them from below. You do not descend into a filled tub. The water arrives at your feet, from the earth itself, still moving upward. The current configuration of the bath dates to the Ansei period, and the arrangement has not needed revision since.

To stay several nights at a place like this is to gradually stop arriving. The first day you are still a visitor. By the third, the rhythm of the water and the sound of the Machida River begin to feel less like atmosphere and more like the actual structure of the hours. Kawasoko is one of the nine celebrated springs of the Kokonoe district, though it carries that distinction without advertisement. It is content to remain what it has been — a single inn beside a river, with warm water rising through stones.
