# Iki Yunomoto Onsen

The island of Iki sits in the Korea Strait, neither close to the mainland nor far from it, and the onsen at Yunomoto occupies the western edge of that island, on a coastal terrace where the land drops quietly toward the sea. The waters here are said to have risen from the earth some seventeen hundred years ago, and the oldest stories connect them to Empress Jingū, who is said to have used them as the first bath for the infant who would become Emperor Ōjin. Whether one holds such accounts loosely or closely, they settle into the atmosphere of the place—not as spectacle, but as a kind of accumulated patience, the sense that the water has been doing what it does for longer than memory properly reaches.

The spring is a chloride-earth salt water, the kind that sits warmly on the skin. It carries a reputation for healing wounds and, in older tradition, for blessing those hoping to conceive. In 1971, the government designated Yunomoto as a national health resort onsen—a quiet institutional acknowledgment of what the locals had long known. There are six inns and hotels here, a few day-bathing facilities, and not much else. That absence is itself something. The place retains the character of a *tōjiba*, a bathing cure village, where people came not to be entertained but to rest in the water, day after day, until the body remembered itself.

To stay several nights here is to slow down in a particular way. The bus from the ferry port at Gōnoura takes time. Arrival is gradual. The small cluster of ryokan along the road does not announce itself loudly. Evenings, one imagines, are genuinely quiet—the kind of quiet that asks nothing of you. The water, drawn from beneath this coastal shelf, is the reason to be here, and after a day or two, that simplicity becomes enough.
