There are a hundred and seventy-seven statues, and all of them are yōkai. The Mizuki Shigeru Road runs from Taishōmachi in Sakaiminato, with bronze figures set into the pavement along its length. It opened in July 1993. For its twenty-fifth anniversary in 2018 the whole street was reworked: the statues were repositioned, and the surface was rebuilt to remove steps and make the route usable by everyone.

From sunset until ten in the evening the figures, the shadow projections and the trees along the street are lit, so the road at night is not the same road as the one you walked in the afternoon. There is a painted yōkai mural more than twenty metres wide and seven and a half metres high, and the frontages along the way are souvenir shops and places to eat, most of them run by families who were trading here before the road existed. Yonago is about forty minutes away by car, there is work in fishing and in tourism, and this is a port town's shopping street continuing by other means rather than a theme park dropped onto a site.

Shopping streets that simply install statues are usually exhausted in one visit. Sakaiminato's has lasted because there are too many figures to finish in an afternoon, and because at twenty-five years old the town rebuilt the arrangement instead of leaving it as it was — the maintenance is the part that worked. The characters themselves are fixed, and no new yōkai are being invented for the purpose, so there is no growth available on that side of the arrangement. What keeps changing is the street they stand in, which is the only part anyone here controls.
