In the gorge at the base of the Daisetsuzan range, the cold goes to work each January. Ice structures rise from the valley floor — small temples, cascading walls, frozen forms that catch the torchlight and hold it. The fireworks are brief. The silence that follows them, with steam rising from the onsen and the canyon walls pressing close on either side, lasts longer than you expect.
