The entry on the list is not a park but a prefectural natural park, taking in Mochio and Sekinoo together. Mochio Park holds about 2,600 cherry trees, Somei-yoshino, yamazakura and yae-zakura among them, set along roughly two kilometres of avenue that climbs to Mochio shrine on the hilltop, according to Miyazaki prefecture. The peak falls from late March into early April.

The other half of the designation is a river bed.

At Sekinoo, Miyakonojo city describes something over a thousand potholes across a stretch six hundred metres long and eighty metres wide. They were cut by fast water carrying grit and small stones, which spun where the bed was soft and widened each hole as they turned. The process that made them has not stopped, so the ground there is still being worked on.

One name therefore covers two things on very different clocks. The avenue flowers for something like two weeks a year and has to be replanted and tended to keep going at all. The holes in the river bed took a length of time nobody standing beside them can feel, and they will go on deepening whether or not anyone visits. Whoever drew the boundary of this park decided the two belonged in one designation, and a visitor who only walks the cherry avenue sees half of what was actually chosen.
