A reading of this place

At the edge of Tōgō Lake, the water is brackish — warm springs rise through the lakebed itself, a quiet geological oddity that has shaped everything around it. The town of Yurihama was stitched together from three former municipalities in 2004, and you can still feel the seams: the fishing harbor at Tomari, the hot-spring inns at Hawai Onsen whose verandas hang over the lake, the pear orchards that give the place part of its name.

The Nijisseiki pear — a local cultivar — appears in roadside stalls and on breakfast trays. Shijimi clams come from the lake. Onsen tamago, slow-cooked in the thermal water, are sold near the footbath area at Tōgō Onsen. These are not dishes assembled for tourists; they are what the land and water here produce. Nearby, the Uzuya no Neagari Matsu, a pine designated as a natural monument, grows with its roots exposed above the ground — an image that suits a place where things surface unexpectedly.

The town also claims to be where ground golf was invented, in the former village of Tomari in 1982, and the Shiokaze no Oka Tomari roadside station still marks that origin. Each summer, a tug-of-war festival and a water festival move through the calendar at their own unhurried pace. The Hawaiian Festival — a legacy of a sister-city relationship — arrives with its own distinct incongruity, and the town absorbs it without ceremony.
