The old post road through Yakage still has its proportions — narrow enough that a slow walk from one end to the other takes less time than expected, wide enough that the merchant facades feel deliberate rather than cramped. The town sits in the southwestern corner of Okayama Prefecture, where the Oda River runs alongside rice paddies and fruit orchards growing pears, grapes, and figs. The Ibi Railroad's Ibara Line stops here, and the platform at Yakage Station opens almost directly onto a streetscape that the sankin-kōtai processions once used.
The Kyū Yakage Honjin Ishii-ke, built in the early seventeenth century and designated a national important cultural property, anchors the old post-town district. Alongside it stands the Kyū Yakage Wakihonjin Takakusa-ke — both the main inn and its auxiliary surviving intact in the same town, a rare circumstance in Japan. Tenjō-in Atsu-hime is recorded among those who stayed here. The Michi-no-Eki Sanyōdō Yakage-juku, opened in 2021, was designed in the idiom of the post-town and connects to the existing shopping street rather than bypassing it.
Food here runs to handmade noodles — Bicchū hiyamugi, Bicchū sōmen — dried and pulled in the local tradition. Yubeishi, a pressed confection, appears in the market stalls. In summer, the Yakage-juku Shukuba Matsuri brings a daimyō procession back through the same street the honjin once served. The Yoshōzan Sōgō Park, up at elevation, looks out over the Okayama plain toward the Seto Inland Sea — a reminder that this inland town was always a passage between coasts, not a destination in itself, though it has quietly become one.
