A reading of this place

Snow arrives here not as a novelty but as a structural fact. The mountains — Hirakugatake, Nakanotake, Arasawadake — close the basin in on itself each winter, and the accumulated depth reshapes the proportions of every building and road. Uonuma, formed when six towns and villages merged in 2004, carries the memory of those older units in its scattered districts, each with its own rhythm: Horinouchi-juku, once a post town on the Mikuni Kaido, still holds a different cadence from the ski-resort corridors to the south.

The rice fields are the other constant. Koshihikari grown in this basin has a reputation that reaches well beyond the prefecture, and the paddies that spread between the mountain walls in the warmer months are the same land that lies under deep snow for much of the year — the same soil, the same water from the Uono River system. Alongside the rice, local producers grow wasabi, sansai, and yamaimo; iwana and ayu come from the rivers. The sake breweries Tamagawa Shuzo and Midorikawa Shuzo press their rice into something else entirely, and their bottles circulate quietly through the local economy.

At Ozawa Washi, the papermaking tradition of the former Yunotani village continues at workshop scale. The Miyashujii Memorial Museum holds the work of a poet rooted in this landscape. These are not large institutions, but they occupy their spaces with a specificity that feels earned — the way a place feels when its industries and its winters have been working on each other for a long time.
