It takes roughly eighty minutes by bus from Tazawako Station, and the road narrows as the mountains close in. In winter, the route shuts entirely. Tamagawa Onsen does not make itself easy to reach, and perhaps that is part of its character — a place that asks something of you before you arrive. Discovered in 1680 by matagi, the hunters of these northern mountains, it was known for centuries as Shikanoyu, the deer's bath. The name changed in 1934, but the essential nature of the place has not.
The water here is Japan's strongest acid spring, pouring out at nine thousand litres per minute — a volume and intensity that feel less like hospitality than like geology asserting itself. The source contains radium, and visitors lie on the heated rock nearby, a practice that has drawn people seeking remedy for generations. A formal tōji facility opened in 1885, and the designation as a national health resort came in 1959, yet none of this institutional history quite prepares you for the blunt physicality of the water itself. The scores for nature and stillness are as high as they go; the score for tourism is low, almost deliberately so. People come to soak, to rest on warm stone, to eat, to sleep, and to soak again. Conversation is quiet, unhurried. The mountains around Senboku are simply there, offering nothing beyond their own presence. After a few days the strong water begins to feel less aggressive, or perhaps you have simply adjusted — your skin a little raw, your thoughts a little slower, the outside world a little further away than before.
