Sakae, Nagano

The Iiyama Line runs through deep valley walls before reaching Mori-miyano-hara, the northernmost station in Nagano Prefecture. From there, Route 405 climbs into Akiyamago — a cluster of settlements pressed against the flanks of Tori-kabuto-yama and Shirasuwa-yama, where the Nakatsu River has cut its own particular geography into the terrain. The dialect here is distinct, the winters long, and the isolation was once so complete that legends of Heike refugees finding refuge in these folds of mountain are still part of how the place understands itself.

Sakae-mura sits where the Chikuma River is still called the Chikuma before it crosses into Niigata and becomes the Shinano. The 2011 northern Nagano earthquake left the village severely damaged, and the road network that now connects its hamlets is partly a product of that recovery. At the roadside station Shinestu-sakae, the produce hall Matatabi carries local vegetables and mountain vegetables alongside Shinshu salmon. Up the valley, Kirimachi Onsen offers bathing in the riverbed itself, where thermal water seeps up through the stones of the Nakatsu River — no roof, no walls, just the current beside you.

The village's craft tradition runs through neko-tsugura, the woven straw cat baskets made here. At Koraasse, the local history museum, Jomon flame-style pottery and objects salvaged during the earthquake recovery share the same exhibition space — a quiet pairing of deep past and recent rupture. Hokuno Tenman Onsen, a single-inn hot spring, serves a kaiseki course built around local beef and Shinshu salmon. The village continues at its own pace, carrying both the weight of its snowfall and the particular stubbornness of a place that has rebuilt itself more than once.
