The lacquerware in a Yamaguchi craft shop carries a particular depth of color — the technique behind it is called 大内塗, named for the medieval lords who once made this basin city a cultural rival to Kyoto. That history sits quietly in the streetscape: 今八幡宮, founded in the Kamakura period and rebuilt under the Ōuchi clan, stands among buildings whose wooden brackets still hold the proportions of the Muromachi era. The five-storied pagoda of 瑠璃光寺 rises above a pond without announcement, as if it had simply been there long enough to stop requiring one.
The city runs on two separate rhythms. Around 山口駅, the old commercial center, the pace is unhurried — the 中心商店街 stretches past modest storefronts, and confectionery shops sell 外郎 in its several local forms, the wagashi made by producers like 豆子郎 and 御堀堂, each with a slightly different texture and sweetness. A few minutes' walk brings you to 一の坂川, a narrow stream lined with stone paths where, in early summer, fireflies gather after dark. Then there is 湯田温泉, the hot-spring district with its white-fox legend and its cluster of inns, where the atmosphere shifts toward the convivial.
Across town at 新山口駅, a different city operates — distribution networks, highway access, the infrastructure of a regional hub. The two nodes rarely feel connected, which gives 山口 its particular doubling: a prefectural capital that still moves at the tempo of a provincial castle town, where 大内人形 sit in shop windows and the festival calendar from July's 祇園祭 through August's lantern festival fills the summer with local ritual.
