A reading of this place

The cherry orchards spread across the alluvial fan where the Mogami and Sagae rivers converge, and in summer the roadside stands fill with fruit so dense and red it looks almost painted. Sagae is a city built around this harvest — the orchards are the industry, the calendar, the civic identity. But the place holds more than cherries. Edible chrysanthemums called *motteno hoka*, summer roses grown for the cut-flower trade, knitted goods, straw sandals — the productive range is broader than the fruit stands suggest.

Jionji, the temple complex whose main hall and former precinct grounds are designated cultural properties, anchors the town's older rhythms. Its ritual calendar runs from the *Shushoe* ceremony in early winter through the *Ichikyokai*, and at the affiliated precincts the *Hirasio Bugaku* — a form of court dance — is performed at Hirasio Kumano Shrine during the *Misaegami* festival. These are not performances staged for visitors; they are observances that continue regardless.

The onsen at the station end of town has been running since the mid-twentieth century, with a cluster of small hotels and a footbath along the street. More recently, the public bathhouse *Yururisagae* opened, offering high-temperature and mid-temperature baths alongside a sauna — a municipal facility used by locals more than tourists. At the roadside station Cherryland, winter brings *kantara-jiru*, a cod soup served during the cold-weather festival. The basin climate is sharp at both ends of the year, and the town's foods and rituals reflect that sharpness honestly.
