The ferry from Naha takes hours; the flight is shorter but lands you at a small terminal where the air already feels different — salt-thick, unhurried. Kumejima sits roughly a hundred kilometers west of the Okinawan main island, and the distance registers in the pace of things. Sugarcane fields run along the roadsides, and from certain angles the island's ridgelines — the Uegusuku range to the north, the Ara range to the south — frame a sky that seems to hold more light than it should.
The island carries two distinct strands of production. One is old: Kumejima tsumugi, a silk textile woven here since the era of the Ryukyu Kingdom, its patterns rooted in a sericulture tradition that outlasted the political changes around it. The other is newer: deep-seawater industries that draw cold water from the ocean floor to produce salt and other food products, alongside the awamori distilled at places like Kumejima no Kumesen and the smaller, traditionally-minded Yoneshima Shuzo. Both breweries are on the same island, and the contrast between them — one shipping widely, one circulating mainly within the community — says something about how Kumejima holds its own economy.
At Okushima, the basalt formation known as Tatami-ishi fractures the shoreline into flat, irregular panels, a designated natural monument that sits quietly alongside a campsite and a sea turtle facility. The Hatenohama sandbar extends far into the surrounding sea, a long arc of coral and white sand reachable by boat. The Kumejima Hotaru-kan works to protect the endemic Kumejima firefly. These aren't packaged experiences so much as evidence of an island that maintains its own ecological and cultural attention, largely on its own terms.
