A reading of this place

The high-speed boat from Shinojima Port comes in low across the water, and the dock smells of diesel and drying nori. Three boatyards stand within walking distance of the harbor; their hulls sit half-finished in the open air, and fishermen step past them on the way to the breakwater, where the black sea bream are said to bite. The island is small enough that the road bends back on itself before you notice.

Shinojima's bond with Ise Jingu runs through the daily rhythm rather than the guidebooks. At Shinmei Jinja, rebuilt every twenty years with timbers passed down from Ise, the dried tai called onbedai is prepared as offering, the same fish that lends its name to one of the island's festivals. Hachioji-sha keeps watch over the boatbuilders and the sea, and during the New Year rites the men of the island carry on observances that have not been smoothed over for outsiders. The temple bells of Itoku-in and Shoho-zenji mark the pilgrim circuit of the Chita Shikoku, though most days they simply mark the afternoon.

Eastward, the curve of Sansan Beach traces the shore in a long, gentle arc; westward, the sun drops behind the inlets of Mikawa Bay. Shirasu and wakame appear on tables without ceremony. The island measures itself in tides and ferry schedules, and a stay of any length begins to take on that shape.
