Kota, Aichi

At the roadside station near the center of town, crates of fude-gaki — the flat-bottomed persimmons shaped like an ink brush — are stacked alongside strawberries and grapes. This is Kota-cho, a small manufacturing town in the southern reaches of Aichi Prefecture, where the hum of automotive and electronics plants along the industrial estates sits in quiet proximity to orchards and paddies spread across the loam terraces.

The ground underfoot is mostly diluvial upland, with the Hirata River cutting north through the middle and the low ridgeline of Mikagane-yama visible to the south. At Honkoji temple, the graves of the Fukazu Matsudaira clan — lords of the Shimabara domain — occupy a site designated as a national historic monument, a reminder that this corner of Mikawa once shaped the early movements of the Tokugawa world. The Kota-machi Kyodo Shiryokan holds related exhibits, and the grounds outside carry an unexpected collection of decommissioned vehicles.

In late spring, the Kota Shidare Zakura Matsuri draws attention to the cultural park, where weeping cherry trees crowd the slopes around a viewing tower. In summer, the Hikoza Matsuri carries the name of Okubo Tadakiyo — known by his popular name Hikozaemon — a figure who grew from this soil into historical legend. The town's rhythms are those of a working place: factory shifts, kite-flying on New Year's mornings, persimmon harvests in autumn.
